The Nigerian music industry is mourning the loss of one of its rising stars, Mohbad, who passed away on September 12, 2023.
The singer’s family confirmed his death in a statement, saying he died of complications from a gunshot wound he sustained during a robbery attack in Lagos.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji, was a talented rapper and singer who rose to fame with his hit songs such as “Koma Jensun”, “Ponmo Sweet” and “Sorry”.
He was signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Music label and had collaborated with other popular artists such as Olamide, Zinoleesky and Lil Kesh.
He was also nominated for several awards, including the Headies Next Rated and the African Music Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA).
Tributes pour in from fans and celebrities
As the news of his death broke, many fans and celebrities took to social media to express their shock and grief. Olamide, who featured Mohbad on his album “UY Scuti”, wrote on Instagram: “Rest in peace my brother. You were a star and a great person. I will miss you and your music. May God comfort your family and friends.”
Tacha, the former Big Brother Naija housemate, also posted a video of herself crying and saying: “This is too much. Mohbad was such a sweet soul. He always supported me and showed me love. I can’t believe he’s gone. This life is unfair.”
Other celebrities who paid tribute to Mohbad include Naira Marley, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Simi, Adekunle Gold and many more. They all praised his talent, personality and impact on the music scene.
Meanwhile, some fans have called for justice for Mohbad, demanding that the perpetrators of the robbery attack be arrested and prosecuted.
They also urged the government to improve the security situation in the country and protect the lives of citizens. A hashtag #JusticeForMohbad has been trending on Twitter, with thousands of tweets calling for action.
