According to all media platforms, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been featured in Whoscored’s Africa Cup of Nations team of the round of 16.
One of the top players for Nigeria and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations overall has been Bassey. The Fulham player has consistently been in Jose Peseiro’s starting lineup.
Bassey demonstrated his abilities once more on Saturday as he played a masterful three-man defence for Nigeria against Cameroon in their round-of-16 match.
The 24-year-old had 38 passes completed, four tackles, one shot, and one interception in 71 touches. Nigeria ultimately prevailed 2-0 in the match.
Bassey has been named to Whoscored’s team of the week in recognition of his heroic deeds with the squad.
Bassey is the only Nigerian in the team, though, since Ademola Lookman—who scored two goals against Cameroon—was left off the roster. Rather, Ryan Mendes of Cape Verde, Mabululu of South Africa, and Gelson Dala of Angola formed the forward line.
The midfield is then completed by Teboho Mokoena (South Africa), Pape Matar Sarr (Senegal), and Fredy (Angola).
Bassey and Pico team up for defence, with To Carneiro (Angola) and Ibrahim Diakite (Guinea) standing in their wings.
On Friday, the AFCON quarterfinals will get underway.
