Arsenal star Jorginho was dispossessed by James Maddison in the build-up to Son Heung-min’s second Tottenham equaliser during the North London Derby.

Jorginho has issued a response to fans after his error for Son Heung-min’s second goal cost Arsenal all three points against Tottenham in the North London Derby. The Italian midfielder endured a difficult afternoon against Spurs after he replaced Declan Rice at half-time.

The £105million summer signing was taken off after the first half after sustaining a back injury. After the game, Mikel Arteta provided an update on Rice’s fitness – claiming he is unsure how long the England international will be sidelined for.

Arteta told reporters: “Yeah he had some discomfort in his back – he was telling us during the first half that he was uncomfortable. When we assessed him at half time he could not continue, so we had to change him.

Hopefully not [long-term]. It’s strange that a player like him has to come off, so we’ll see.”

Thomas Partey continues to recover from a groin injury and is not expected to return until after the October international break. This means Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny remain as the only two senior holding midfielders at the club for Arteta to select from.

However, the Italian international did not convince fans that he can put in the same level of performance as Rice after he was at fault for Son’s second goal at the Emirates Stadium. After the game, Jorginho issued a heartfelt response to Gunners fans – thanking them for their overwhelming support – which included the home supporters chanting his name after Spurs made it 2-2.

In a post on social media, Jorginho wrote: “A painful mistake today, but seeing how everyone reacted after it to support and lift me up, my teammates, coaches, staff and the fans, it gives me even more motivation to work harder, because all of you deserve my best version. Thank you so much for the support Arsenal family.”
